A parasitic fly larvae that consumes living tissue has resurfaced in Texas and New Mexico, with over 30 confirmed cases affecting livestock and pets since June. Veterinarians and animal welfare organizations are urging owners to monitor their animals closely, as the New World screwworm had been largely eliminated from the United States for more than five decades before its recent reemergence.
