Copyright & Fair Use
How Mediazone respects copyrights - Last updated: October 15, 2025
Mediazone.nl respects copyrights and follows Dutch legislation for transformative content. All our content is generated as transformative works, not as direct copies of original sources. We believe in fair attribution and supporting original creators.
Copyright Compliance: Mediazone does not use direct quotes but creates indirect references in accordance with Dutch fair use principles. All content is transformative and news-driven, always with clear source attribution.
1. Dutch Copyright Law Compliance
Mediazone strictly adheres to Dutch Copyright Act (Auteurswet) and EU copyright directives. All our content is generated as transformative works, not as direct copies of original sources.
Key Legislation:
Copyright Act Article 10 - Right of Quotation
"It is permitted to make short quotations from a published work in connection with one's own considerations, for illustration or to support what the quoter asserts..."
Mediazone does not use direct quotes but creates own considerations with indirect references.
Copyright Act Article 13 - Adaptation
"The copyright in a work also extends to adaptations of the work, unless the adaptation has an original character and can be considered an independent work."
Our AI summaries have an original character and stand as independent works.
Copyright Act Article 15c - News Reports
"It is permitted to satisfy news needs, articles on current economic, political or religious topics... to be taken from newspapers or magazines..."
We don't copy but create new content for the Dutch AI community.
2. Transformative Content Technology
Our AI systems are specifically designed to create transformative content that respects copyrights:
AI Summaries
TRANSFORMATIVEHow it works:
- No direct quotes or copying
- Maximum 3 consecutive words matching
- Synonym replacement for originality
- Dutch reformulation of core concepts
- Full articles analyzed for contextual summaries
Result: Each summary is an original work that communicates the essence of the original without copying its specific expression.
Transformative Titles
ORIGINALHow it works:
- Completely new title structures
- Based on core concepts, not on form
- Dutch patterns and formulations
- Keyword extraction for original expression
- Automatic check prevents more than 70% overlap with original title
Dutch Translation
PROFESSIONALHow it works:
- Azure Translator for professional translations
- Copyright compliance checks built-in
- Cultural adaptations for Dutch readers
- Added context where needed
3. Character Limits & Platform Policy
Mediazone enforces strict character limits to comply with copyright and media legislation. Here's exactly how many characters we use per platform:
Character Limits per Platform
Website (mediazone.nl)
Ratio: ~15-20% of original article length
Fair use: Falls within Dutch quotation right
X (Twitter)
β οΈ Important: Images on X are automatically generated by X itself via their Open Graph protocol,NOT by Mediazone. We have no control over which images X displays.
LinkedIn Policy: We only share high-value AI news on LinkedIn, targeted at professionals. More context and explanation than on other platforms.
- β’ Transformative work: Claude AI completely rewrites in own words
- β’ Thematic grouping with Dutch context
- β’ Full source attribution with URLs to originals
- β’ AI transparency disclaimer in every post
- β’ Complies with LinkedIn Community Standards & User Agreement
- β’ Weekly digest format with 29-65 source articles per post
Newsletter
Format: Top 5-10 articles of the week with slightly longer summaries for deeper insight. Opt-in only, full GDPR compliance.
Why These Limits?
βFair Use Compliance: Short fragments fall under quotation right (Copyright Act Art. 10)
βTransformative Character: Enough space for original formulation, not enough for copying
βNews Value Preservation: Reader gets core message but must read original for details
βPlatform Best Practices: Optimized for engagement without harming original creator
4. Dutch Law Compliance via MCP Server
Mediazone uses a specially developed Model Context Protocol (MCP) Server to automatically verify all content against Dutch legislation before publication.
What Does the MCP Server Check?
β 100% Open Source: Our MCP server is fully open source and available on GitHub. Other Dutch media platforms can also use this tool for their own compliance checks. Transparency and collaboration come first.
Technical Workflow
AI generates summary
Claude/GPT creates transformative Dutch content
MCP Server validation
Dutch Legal MCP checks all legal aspects
Approval or regeneration
Content is published or regenerated if not compliant
Publication with attribution
Only 100% compliant content is published with full attribution
5. Technical Implementation
Our technical infrastructure is designed with copyright compliance as core principle:
Overlap Detection
Automatic check prevents more than 70% overlap between summary and original title. Content with too much overlap is automatically rejected and regenerated.
Content Scraping
Full articles are analyzed to create contextual summaries instead of superficial reformulation. This ensures deeper understanding and more original content.
Rate Limiting
Respectful scraping with delays between requests. We treat external sources with respect and don't overload servers.
Human Oversight
All content is reviewed for compliance. We don't blindly trust AI but perform human checks.
90-Day Data Retention PolicyFAIR USE ENHANCEMENT
Crucial for Copyright Compliance: All articles are automatically removed after 90 days. This is a key factor in fair use doctrine and shows respect for original sources.
Technical Implementation:
- β’ DataCleanupService: Daily Hangfire job at 02:00 (Amsterdam time)
- β’ Automatic: Articles older than 90 days are deactivated
- β’ Proportional: Temporary use = less copyright risk
- β’ Google News Precedent: Similar to accepted news aggregation services
Legal Impact: EU Copyright Directive Art. 5(3)(c) - Temporary reproduction right for news aggregation. No permanent archiving = no competition with original publishers.
4. Source Attribution & Attribution
Transparent source attribution is essential to us. Every article on Mediazone contains:
1. Direct Link to Original
Each summary contains a prominent link to the original article. We encourage readers to read the full article at the original source.
2. Clear Source Attribution
The name of the original source and publication date are always mentioned, so credit is given where credit is due.
3. Context and Added Value
We add Dutch context and explain complex concepts, so our content offers added value on top of the original.
