China sends 40,000-ton Type 076 drone carrier ‘Sichuan’ to South China Sea for trials

Back to overview

China’s most advanced amphibious assault ship has left Shanghai and is heading into the South China Sea — the same waters where the United States, the Philippines, and Japan are conducting their largest joint military exercises of the year. The PLA Navy announced Tuesday on its official Weibo account that the Sichuan, China’s first Type 076 amphibious assault ship and hull number 51, had set sail for “relevant waters” in the South China Sea to carry out scientific research trials and training missions, testing the performance of multiple onboard systems and platforms. The military described the move as a “routine cross-regional trial and training exercise organised in accordance with the vessel’s overall construction plan” and said it was not directed at any specific target. The timing is hard to miss. The Balikatan joint military exercises — the annual drills between the U.S. and Philippines, this year joined by Japan with combat troops for the first time — are running from April 20 through May 8, spanning the Philippine archipelago with a heavy focus on northern Luzon. Japan deployed three transport and escort ships, transport aircraft, Type 88 surface-to-ship missiles, and 1,400 personnel. What Makes the Sichuan Different The Sichuan is not a standard amphibious ship . It is the world’s first amphibious assault vessel equipped with an Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System (EMALS) — the same catapult technology found on China’s Type 003 Fujian aircraft carrier and the U.S. Navy’s Ford-class carriers, which was previously deployed only on dedicated aircraft carriers. The 40,000-ton vessel features a full-length flight deck measuring approximately 260 meters by 43 meters, a twin-island superstructure, a stern well dock for landing craft, and arresting gear for fixed-wing recovery. That electromagnetic catapult is central to what makes this South China Sea trial significant. Photo from the launch ceremony of the Type 076 Sichuan vessel. Beyond its drone-carrier rol…
