Researchers from Harvard Business School and Stanford University conducted an experiment at a U.K. fintech company to test whether generative AI could enable non-specialists to perform specialized work at the same level as experts. The study found a "GenAI wall effect"—a threshold beyond which AI cannot meaningfully bridge the expertise gap between specialists and non-specialists. These findings suggest that executives should reconsider workforce reorganization strategies that assume AI will allow employees to seamlessly transition between different professional functions.
