Britse ingenieurs bouwden in 1860 drijvend droogdok voor Bermuda
Back to overview
In the 1860s, British engineers faced a unique challenge: Bermuda's porous limestone geology made it impossible to build a traditional dry dock for Royal Navy ships. Instead of abandoning the project, they designed an innovative solution—a giant floating dock weighing 8,000 tons and measuring 116 meters long, which could be towed to the island. This engineering marvel allowed the strategically important naval hub to service and repair its fleet without lengthy delays, representing a creative response to an otherwise insurmountable geographical problem.
