Grootste maanimpact kan mantelmateriaal blootleggen bij Artemis-landingszone

Back to overview

A new study suggests the Moon's largest impact basin, the South Pole–Aitken Basin, was formed by an impactor traveling from north to south, contradicting some earlier interpretations. This discovery could significantly impact NASA's Artemis missions, as astronauts landing near the lunar south pole may access material excavated from the Moon's mantle during the ancient collision. Studying such samples would allow scientists to examine lunar mantle material without extensive drilling, fulfilling a decades-long scientific goal.
