Researchers at FAMU-FSU College of Engineering have identified the precise conditions under which spinning air currents, called vortices, destabilize aircraft during high-speed flight. Using wind-tunnel tests and computer simulations, the team found that at low angles of incidence, vortices remain balanced and predictable, but beyond a critical angle they become asymmetric and generate unwanted side forces that can push aircraft off course or cause unintended rotation.
