Schorpioenen versterken giftige stekels met metalen als zink en ijzer

Back to overview

Researchers from the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History discovered that scorpions reinforce their stingers and pincers with metals like zinc, iron, and manganese to increase strength and sharpness. A study analyzing 18 scorpion species used advanced microscopy and X-ray analysis to map how these metals are distributed within their weapons. The findings suggest that metal enrichment patterns reflect each species' hunting style, with some scorpions relying more on crushing claws while others depend on aggressive stinging.
