The US has begun lowering 10 million pounds of steel nearly a mile underground in South Dakota to construct the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE), one of the world's most ambitious particle physics projects. Led by Fermilab in collaboration with CERN and the Sanford Underground Research Facility, the steel beams will form massive detector modules containing liquid argon cooled to -300 degrees Fahrenheit to capture neutrino interactions.
